Our committee was recently selected and is made up of 8 students from 4th, 5th and 6th class. It is a very exciting and responsible role that these students have for the year. They will represent all their peers in the school, lead and inspire others to get excited about getting active and moving more often. It is recommended that children have at least 60 minutes of activity every day. The committee will meet regularly creating and leading initiatives to develop an active and healthy school. They will work alongside teachers on the Active School committee to share the important voices of the students as well as sending important messages to each class throughout the year. Their first task was to spread the word about the Active School Flag to each class and explain our Active Break challenge which began on the 21st of November.
We are so lucky to have a brilliant variety of clubs in our surrounding area. Over the next few weeks in March and April we have arranged in school coaching sessions with some exciting local clubs. These coaches will be coming in to our school to share their expertise with the staff and children and we are all very excited. We have timetables up on our Active Schools Notice Board for all our teachers and students to see. Some of these partnerships include, Cricket Leinster, Excel Gymnastics and Street Arts Academy.
40 boys and girls from 3rd to 6th class represented St. Johns in a cross country race is John Paul Park in Cabra. These students ran a trial in school to get selected for the race on Wednesday 15th of March. Unfortunately it was typical cross country weather as it rained the entire day, but despite the rain and the mud everyone had a great day and competed wonderfully. We came away with many medals and trophies. Well done to everyone we are very proud of your achievements.
Thank you to all those at our local Lucan Sarsfield GAA club for coming to our school over the last few weeks. Our junior classes loved getting special coaching as they begin to develop the early skills of GAA. It is brilliant to have our local clubs involved with St Johns. For those interested in getting a membership, check out the Lucan Sarsfield website HERE.
Congratulations to our Girls soccer team who recently played a blitz against Loreto Crumlin on Thursday March 2nd. We had lots of fun and we are very proud of everyone who took part. Thanks to Ms Breen for all her coaching after school to get the girls prepared.
Our Active Committee were very busy creating a whole school timetable for our new table tennis kits which were kindly gifted to us by Active Schools. Each class will get the kits for one week where they can be used during P.E, as movement breaks and some teachers have even planned to organise a class tournament. We are excited to see them in action over the coming weeks.
Week 2 of our Active Break Challenge has been a great success. The students have been enjoying their movement breaks throughout the week and we were lucky enough to partner up with Luke, one of the Club Community Rugby Officers of Leinster Rugby. The students had a great two days of learning the game of rugby and the various skills involved in rugby. A big thank you to Luke and his team for coming out and providing excellent coaching sessions, we are very appreciative of his expertise. Who knows, we could have some up and coming rugby stars from St. Johns!
Our Under 12 Boy's took part in a blitz in Lucan Sarsfield G.A.A. we played 6 games in total with our two teams having great fun! Well done boys!
