Welcome to our Active School Flag page

What is an Active School Flag?

ASF is a Department of Education and Skills initiative supported by Healthy Ireland. The Active School Flag (ASF) is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. The process aims to get more schools, more active, more often. Our challenge will be to find interesting and exciting ways to energize the school day. Being active will help in the classroom with increased concentration and focus as well as being happy learners!

There are targets outlined for 4 clear areas which need to be achieved.

The 4 areas are:

  1. Physical Education
  2. Physical Activity
  3. Partnerships
  4. Active School Week

Keep an eye on the website to see the different ways we have been getting active in school! As a community, we are excited to come together and improve our physical health. We know that many families will have wonderful ideas on ways we can get everyone active, as well as possible skills and resources, so please let us know if you have any suggestions and would like to get involved. Click on each of the 4 areas to stay updated on what we are doing each month to stay active.

Our Active Slogan Winner

As part of The Active School Process and #FeelGoodFriday every student from 2nd– 6thclass took part in designing and creating their own active slogan. There was a lot of excitement as the winning slogan would become St. John’s Active Slogan for the year! The student committee decided on the 5 finalists, one from each class. These posters were displayed on our Active School’s notice board and a whole school vote took place. Our committee carefully counted all the votes. It was a close vote between 1st and 2nd place but the overall winner came from Ms Barry’s 5th class with a very artistic drawing and slogan – “Stop Gaming, Start Training”. A huge congratulation was given to the winner over the school intercom and our principal Mr Carroll presented a very special trophy and certificate. We also got our junior infant, senior infants and 1stclass students involved in a colouring competition. Our student committee decided on the winners from each class and presented each winner with certificates during Friday’s assembly. Well done to everyone for taking part! Take a look at our the wonderful finalists and their posters, as well as our colouring competition winners.
