Our Go-Games girls teams got there hands on some Silverware.
Thanks to Active Schools who kindly donated table tennis sets. Each class has been following the timetable created by the committee members, and it is great to see everyone get so active during the school day. It has been a creative and exciting addition to the list of movement break ideas. However, the teachers were feeling competitive amongst each other and set up their own tournament. It was a close one but SNA Paul came out on top!
We had a great time celebrating Seachtain na Gaeilge from the 1st to 17th of March. On the 16th of March the whole school wore green, some classes had a parade outside while completing their run around Ireland, as well as other classes participating in a ceilí in the hall.
Our playground leaders have got off to a great start. Prior to engaging with their first day as playground leaders they had many meetings with Ms Lonergan to brainstorm suitable playground games, create a timetable, create their own name badges and they also created a box of necessary equipment. They store this box away carefully and it is clearly labelled to be used by playground leaders only. Our junior classes love learning new games on a Friday with the senior students. Our playground leaders are learning excellent leadership skills and enjoy teaching games they also played when they were younger.
During Children's Mental Health week 6th - 12th of February we learned the connection between our bodies and our mind. We explored the benefit of how moving our body can positively effect the way we feel. Our 6th class students along with teachers Ms Bruen and Ms Maguire created a timetable for the whole school to engage in active stations outside. Our senior students took on great leadership roles as everyone else engaged in activities that explored some fundamental movement skills. There were plenty of laughs and smiles throughout the yard that continued on into the classroom. On another day Ms Coyle and Ms Brennan offered yoga classes to each class, once again showing the connection between our body and mind. Students had an opportunity to balance and become in control of their slow body movements. On Friday we had a Happy Feel Good Disco where each class showed some excellent dance moves, enjoying moving to the music. It was great to see the positive impact this week had on the school as a whole.
We completed our January Skipping challenge with some #FeelGoodFriday activities. During assembly some students and teachers competed in a skip-off to see who could get the most skips in 30 seconds. There was lots of excitement during the teacher competition. Our Active committee did a great job organizing the competition and counting each persons skip. They also got all the infants involved by doing some jumping jacks. As well as this we provided more skipping ropes during yard time for all the students to enjoy. Classes added up all their skips over the past few weeks to see how many mountains they reached with the Active Schools Climb the heights challenge. It was a great #FeelGoodFriday!
Our students have successfully completed our 4 week Active Break Challenge and we are very proud of all the students and teachers for getting involved. All the students loved getting their bodies moving each day for 4 weeks as it helped them focus, stay healthy and release some extra energy all while having fun. Everyone was very exciting with their reward of Active Homework which our active committee will distribute in the New Year.
We had a great time at St Johns the Evangelist Adamstown at our Santa Dash for #FeelGoodFriday! We dressed up and brought our Christmas spirit. Santa heard about all the hard work we have been putting in to stay active and get our Active Schools Flag this year, so he decided to reward us with a surprise visit during our Santa Dash.
He is so impressed with everyones efforts to get our bodies moving
throughout the day, giving children high fives and encouragement as they ran around the yard. Our DJ Amanda was brilliant playing festive tunes over the intercom. Our senior classes took to the hall when it began to rain where they became reindeers galloping through the sky helping Santa pull his heavy sleigh!
We have completed 3 full weeks of our active breaks challenge. All the students are continuing to stay active throughout the busy school day. Teachers and students are coming up with different and exciting ways both inside and outside the classroom to get everyone’s bodies moving. Not even the cold weather and snow could stop us! Ms Murphy’s junior infants enjoyed getting their movement break outside in the snow. We have one more week to go!
We have been working hard after our first week of the Active Break Challenge determined to get our reward of active homework for one week. This week we had some unique ideas for relay races as Mr. Forde's class took part in the snowman assembly relay race. It was important that our snowmen had hats, scarves, buttons, a nose and all of his facial features.
We are very excited and eager to get our Active Flag initiatives up and running this year. We began Active Breaks Challenge on Monday 21st of November. Our student committee laminated and put active break challenge charts on the front of each of the classroom doors so classes could track their active breaks. For the next 4 week our schools commits to the challenge of doing an active break every day. These activities could be going for a run or walk around the school, having a dance in the classroom or even engaging in a quick exercise or yoga routine. Lots of the classes are loving Joe Wicks workouts as well as some dances on Go Noodle. Each class has got off to a great start. Our student committee awards a star on Friday afternoons but only if the chart has 5 ticks. Each class is working towards 4 stars which means at the end of the challenge they will be awarded ACTIVE HOMEWORK instead of written homework!!
